CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Former Mercer men's soccer standout Omar Hernandez has signed a professional contract with the Chattanooga Red Wolves of the United Soccer League, the organization announced recently.
Â
Hernandez played a key role in MU's run to the Southern Conference Tournament title in November after playing his first three collegiate seasons at Wake Forest. He saw action in 18 matches during the fall, including 16 starts, and recorded nine points on three goals and a trio of assists. The Dalton, Ga., native scored for the first time in the Black & Orange against USF, and then tallied scores in back-to-back contests with Bradley and Winthrop.
Â
Prior to his time in Middle Georgia, Hernandez played in 70 matches (36 starts) across three full seasons (2019-22) at Wake Forest, Â scoring 13 goals and assisting on 10 others. Hernandez was named an all-region honoree, as well as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, following his junior campaign. He also grabbed a spot on the ACC Preseason Watchlist prior to his senior season.
Â
"We are very proud to see Omar sign with Chattanooga Red Wolves," said Mercer head coach Brad Ruzzo. "He came to us with four years of quality experience playing college soccer at the highest level with Wake Forest. With one year of eligibility left, Omar provided us with a great deal of experience, skill, and competive edge. He was able to win a championship with us, hone his craft and take his game to the professional level. We wish him and Chattanooga Red Wolves all of the best in this new chapter."
