MACON - The Mercer volleyball team is set to compete at the National Invitational Volleyball Championships starting on Thursday, Dec. 5. The Bears were named as an automatic qualifier after their success throughout the regular season, making their first postseason appearance in program history.Â
The Bears lost a heartbreaking five-set match in the Southern Conference championship match to Wofford on Nov. 24 and therefore did not punch themselves a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. However, Mercer still looks to continue their historic season and face some of the top programs in the country as they compete for a different title at the NIVC Tournament.Â
The tournament consists of 32 of the best teams available in each of the nation's 32 conferences, after the NCAA Tournament committee makes its picks. A team that is offered an automatic berth by the NIVC is a program that finished the highest in it's conference's regular season standings. Mercer received that berth when they clinched the SoCon regular season title back on Nov. 15. The tournament is divided into regions with 16 first-round games, followed by 8 second-round games, 4 third-round games, two semifinal games, and the championship.
The Bears will compete in the East Carolina Region in Greenville, N.C. along with the University of Connecticut, Winthrop and East Carolina. Mercer is set to face UCONN in the first round of the tournament, a team that finished third in the Big East behind Creighton and Marquette who will compete in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies finished with an overall record of 24-7 and a conference record of 12-6. UCONN swept Villanova to complete the regular season on Nov. 23 but then fell to the Wildcats in the first round of the Big East tournament on Nov. 27.
Mercer concluded the regular season leading the NCAA in team service aces with 257 (2.14 per set) along with Brooke Phillips finishing in second with 74 and five different Bears recorded more than 30 on the season. Skyler Bumpers and MeMe Davis were named to the SoCon All-Tournament team after their standout performances at the championships. Bumpers registered career high kills and points with 21 and 24 respectively in the championship match against Wofford, she also posted 40 kills (3.64 per set), .341 hitting percentage and 10 blocks. Davis put up 83 digs (7.55 per set), 20 assists and four service aces throughout the tournament.
First serve is set for 3 p.m. between the Bears and the Huskies on Thursday, Dec. 5 at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum and will be streamed on ESPN+.
