ATLANTA – Graduate midfielder Chase Cope would lead the Bears with a duo of goals as the Mercer men's lacrosse team falls to No.19 North Carolina, 13-5, in the Atlanta Lacrosse Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

Four different players logged goals for the Bears (1-2) who were playing their third game of the season. Mercer's defense stood strong holding the Tar Heels to a series history low of 13 goals allowed. Colin Kelley led the defense with 24 saves. Saturday's outing was the 2024 season opener for the Tar Hells (1-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED

North Carolina would fall behind early with the Bears opening scoring off the stick of Chase Cope. However the Tar Heels would respond, but again Chase Cope would find the back of the net for the second time in the first quarter. The Tar Heels would score two before the first ended.
Michael Frederick and Jackson Hirschy netted goals 32 seconds apart amid the first-quarter run, and fueled the hosts to an 8-2 lead after the opening period.
After halftime the Bears would score a Man-Up goal from a 10-yard step down shot from Mikey Frederick.
UNC would go on a eight goal run to end the third and start the fourth, putting the game out of reach of the Bears.

TOP BEARS

Chase Cope paced the scoring with two goals apiece, while Michael Frederick, Christian and Ryan Brooks all netted one goals.
Kyle Cox would turn in the most of assists for the Bears with two.

NOTABLES

13 goals allowed is the fewest goals allowed in the series history.
Kelley's 24 saves is a new career high.

Mercer will make the trip West Point, NY to take on Army on February 24th at 12 PM at Michie Stadium
The Bears will be back in action at home again on March 10 when they take on Le Moyne at Five Star Stadium.
