Bears Drop Midweek Affair At Georgia Southern

STATESBORO – Georgia Southern logged a dozen hits and pushed across multiple runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to fuel an 8-0 victory over the visiting Mercer softball team on Wednesday evening at the GS Softball Complex.

Senior Alyssa Woods doubled and legged out an infield single to fuel a 2-for-3 night for the Bears (4-2) who will play five home games this weekend as part of the Mercer Bear Invitational at Sikes Field. Wednesday's outing snapped a two-game skid for the Eagles (5-3).

Newcomer Gabby Ellis (0-2) saddled the loss for the Bears despite allowing just a pair of earned runs in four innings from the circle. Fellow freshman Grace Roark finished out the evening for the visitors, but was not awarded a decision.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 4	Georgia Southern used its first two at-bats to move a pair of runners into scoring position, and then took the lead for good on a RBI groundout from Jess Mazur. Courtney Ball pushed the lead out to a pair of runs two batters later when she won a 12-pitch battle at the plate with a run-scoring single to left field.

The Bears will play five home games as part of the Mercer Bear Invitational at Sikes Field this weekend. Mercer is set to open its portion of round-robin tournament play on Friday with a 4 p.m. matchup against Troy (9-4).
