COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior Jiya Hastings registered a personal-best leap of 5.33 meters to finish seventh in the Long Jump and highlight action for the Mercer track & field team on opening-day action at the South Carolina-hosted Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday.

Hastings, who finished 15^th in the same event last weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invite, attained her best jump on her fifth attempt of the afternoon, and then followed with a jump of 5.31 meters in her final attempt.

Freshman Jayla Battle logged the only other official mark for the Bears on Friday with a toss of 26.09 meters in the Javelin Throw on the way to a 17^th-place finish. It was her first career competition in that discipline.

Mercer will continue action at the Weems Baskin Invitational on Saturday in a quartet of events, beginning with the Shot Put at 10 a.m. The Bears also have entries in the 400m Dash (1:00 p.m.), the 100m Dash (1:45) and the 400m Hurdles (2:55).
