JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – East Tennessee State used a 7-5 victory on Court No. 2 to capture the early doubles point, then captured five of the six singles matchups in straight sets, to fuel a 6-1 victory over visiting Mercer on Wednesday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
The setback snapped a three-match win streak for the Bears (4-10, 2-1 SoCon) who dipped to third in the Southern Conference standings following the result. It was the second-straight win for the Bucs (6-9, 3-0) who notched their fourth home triumph of the season in the process as well.
Doubles play saw tiebreaks decide matchups on both Court Nos. 1 and 3, but East Tennessee State emerged from the rubble with the early advantage when Dimitri Badra and Adam Nagoudi emerged with the 7-5 ouster of MU's Marceau Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic.
The Bucs quickly finished off Mercer in singles play. Milledge Cossu took down Fouilhoux, 6-1 and 6-3 on Court No. 3, while Peter Kalocsai took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lucas Dini at No. 2 singles. Francisco Lamas clinched the team win for ETSU minutes later when he finished off a 6-1, 6-4 win over Victor Putter at No. 6 singles.
Senior Samuel Barrow registered the lone team point of the day for the Orange & Black with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Pedro Cressoni at No. 4 singles.
The Bears will be back in action again on Saturday when they open up a three-match home stand against Alabama State (11-1). First serves are scheduled for 11 a.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center and admission is free.
