CLEMSON, S.C. – Junior Tori Hedgecock hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to help support a 2-hit shutout from sophomore right-hander Grace Taylor, and the Mercer softball team laid a 6-game losing streak to rest with a 5-0 victory over Longwood on Saturday at Clemson's McWhorter Stadium.
Â
The result marked the first shutout of the season for the Bears (9-11), and the first blanking of an opponent for the Orange & Black since a 5-0 home shellacking of Western Carolina on April 23 of last season. It was the second-straight loss for the Lancers (7-14) who were set to close out the Tiger Invitational against host Clemson later Saturday.
Â
Taylor (4-4) retired the first 16 batters she faced, but lost her bid for a perfect game via a 1-0 out double in the sixth. She also struck out one to highlight her fourth complete game outing of the campaign.
