Bears Trek To Samford For Pivotal SoCon Matchup On Friday

MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will snap the lid on the road portion of its 2024 spring schedule on Friday when the Bears head to Birmingham, Ala., to battle Southern Conference nemesis Samford in a pivotal league matchup at SU's Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavillion. First service is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Fans unable to make the trip to central Alabama can still follow the match in progress via a live video link provided by the Samford athletics department.
Winners in six of its last seven outings, Mercer (7-10, 4-1 SoCon) will carry a three-match win streak into Friday's tilt with its league rival, including a 5-2 home win over defending SoCon regular season champion Chattanooga on Sunday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The Bears are mere percentage points behind the second-place Bulldogs in the latest SoCon standings, and a win would put the Orange & Black in prime position for a No. 2 seed in next week's (April 18-21) SoCon Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Senior Samuel MacLeod, who picked up SoCon Player of the Week honors for the second-straight week on Tuesday, has the hot hand for MU as he has captured six of his last singles matchups on Court No. 5, while also teaming up with fellow senior Samuel Barrow for five-straight triumphs at No. 3 doubles. Barrow, however, boasts a team-best 14 singles wins across the 2023-24 campaign, including seven in spring dual competition.
Samford (12-7, 5-1) snapped a three-match skid with a 6-1 home rout of Wofford on Sunday, and will close out its regular season against the Bears on Friday. Australian Darcy Nicholls (9-5) and India product Sandeep Mohandoss (8-2) have combined to record an impressive 17 singles wins at the Nos. 3 and 2 positions, respectively, this season. Mohandoss has captured three-straight outings at No. 2 singles, while Nicholls will ride a three-match winning streak at No. 3 singles into Friday.
SU's tandem of Mohandoss and senior Maxwell Giddens have been a proverbial bulldozer in doubles competition this season, dropping just one match in 13 outings during the spring campaign. That setback came in mid-January in the form of a 6-1 setback to South Alabama's Jack Clements and Braden Hannig. Mohandoss/Giddens have won their last three doubles contests since that ousting.
Samford leads the all-time series with the Bears, 7-5, but Mercer snagged a 5-2 win over their SoCon rivals last season in Macon.
