Bears Prepare For Meeting With Fifth-Ranked North Carolina On Tuesday

MACON -Â The Mercer men's soccer team travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Tuesday for their first-ever meeting with the fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.Â

Tuesday's match marks the first meeting between the Bears and Tar Heels. The match-up is the Bears' first against an ACC opponent since defeating Virginia Tech 3-2 on September 5, 2022.Â

LAST TIME OUT
Mercer's last match, also played in the state of North Carolina, came last Tuesday at Davidson. The Wildcats defeated the Bears by a score of 2-1.Â

Davidson opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a goal by Nico Quanbeck, and the score would remain 1-0 at the intermission.Â

Mercer would fight back, however. In the 59th minute, Mercer midfielder Carlos Santamaria took the ball from a Wildcat in the middle third of the field and dribbled his way to the top of the box, where he buried a shot off of his left foot for an equalizing goal. The goal was his second of the season.

The score stayed knotted at one for the next 18 minutes, but the difference in the match came when Mercer was called for a foul in the box in the 77th minute, resulting in a penalty kick for Davidson. The Wildcats took advantage with a goal and held on to secure the win.Â

For the match, both sides had 15 shots and four corner kicks. Mercer goalkeeper Trevor McMullen made four saves on the night.Â

North Carolina enters Tuesday's match with a 5-0-2 record on the year and a 2-0-0 record in ACC play. The Tar Heels' last time out came on Friday against North Carolina State, a 2-0 victory.Â

Offensively, North Carolina is led by forward Martin Vician. The graduate student is tied for seventh in the country with six goals scored. Andrew Cordes is the only goalkeeper to have seen action for the Heels, allowing four goals with nine saves and a 0.57 goals against average.Â
