BOCA RATON, Fla. – Mercer reeled in five of the first six singles matches, including a trio in straight sets, and then split four doubles bouts, to get the best of Big 10 foe Wisconsin on opening-day action of the Florida Atlantic Hidden Dual Tournament on Friday morning.
Â
The 3-day event in South Florida is being conducted in a "hidden duals" format which consists of a series of head-to-head matches between two teams. While the individual results of all completed matches are official, there is no team score recorded.
Â
Junior Nemanja Stefanovic, along with newcomers Amen Prince Gandonou and Tom Hagelauer, all made quick work of their Wisconsin opponents to get the day started for the Bears, while Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and senior Marceau Fouilhoux joined the party a short time later toughing out 6-3 third sets.
Â
The story was much of the same in doubles play as the 55th-ranked tandem of Stefanovic and Fouilhoux eked out a 7-5 victory over UW's Matthew Fullerton and Ferdinand Kloesters, while Padio/Gandonou worked to post a similar 7-5 win over Michael Minasyan and Tomas Zlatohlavek.
Â
The Bears are back on the courts of FAU's Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center on Saturday to continue doubles play against the host Owls, before getting their legs back to face Army in both singles and doubles play. Mercer will close out its stay in Boca Raton on Sunday with midday singles action against FAU.
