MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will open the dual meet portion of their spring schedule on Friday when the Bears trek to the Plains of Auburn, Ala., to battle the Tigers at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. First services are scheduled for noon ET.
Friday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two squads since Auburn posted a 5-2 win over the visiting Bears on Feb. 19, 2016. The matchup will mark the spring season opener for the Tigers who are also scheduled to take on North Alabama on Friday afternoon at home.
The Bears are fresh off a solid showing at the Florida Atlantic Hidden Dual Tournament last weekend in which they racked up a dozen singles wins and six doubles victories at FAU's Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center. The Orange & Black reeled in victories in five of the top-6 singles matchups with Wisconsin on Friday, before registering five more singles wins against Army on Saturday.
Junior Nemanja Stefanovic reaped some of the benefits of the strong showing in South Florida on Monday when he was crowned as the Southern Conference Player of the Week. The Canadian tallied a perfect 6-0 mark (3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) in weekend competition, including a three-set victory over Florida Atlantic's John Bernard in Sunday's finale.
Newcomer Hod'Abalo Isak Padio still carries the torch for the Bears in singles play, having already racked up 11 singles wins in the 2024-25 campaign. Stefanovic will tote nine singles victories into Friday's matchup with Auburn, and has won five of his last six matches on the singles courts.
The 55th-ranked duo of Stefanovic and junior Marceau Fouilhoux are one of two MU tandems with double-digit victories (10) in doubles play this season. Padio, along with fellow newcomer Amen Prince Gandonou, are 12-4 on the doubles courts in 2024-25.
Four players racked up a team-best seven singles victories for the Tigers in the fall, including senior Will Nolan who will ride a personal four-match win streak into Friday. Nolan and fellow Englishman Billy Blaydes comprise the nation's 15th-ranked doubles tandem which registered a 10-3 mark during fall competition.
