
Women's Tennis Drops Close Match, 4-2 To FGCU

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's tennis team dropped a close match, 4-2 to Florida Gulf Coast Sunday afternoon from LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
With Florida Gulf Coast leading, 3-2 the Eagles clinched the match in a close three set match on court five between Mercer's Marie Bannmeyer and Florida Gulf Coast's Nora Svennson. Svennson won the match, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The day started off with doubles action where FGCU's Svennson and Paloma Goldsmith defeated Emilia Cosatto and Jelena Gojkovic, 6-3 on court two. Mercer won the second doubles match on court three as Bannmeyer and Dzhastina Mikhnova defeated FGCU's Gabriela Macias and Anjali Kotecha, 6-3. FGCU ultimately won the last doubles match to win the doubles point as the Eagles' Isabella Colmenares and Ashley Matz defeated Mercer's Marina de Diego Quinones and Tea Zivic, 6-3.
In singles play, Marina de Diego Quinones won by injury default against FGCU's Isabella Colmenares. The match was called in the first set after de Diego Quinones got off to a good start leading 3-0. The Eagles' Gabriella Macias defeated Tea Zivic, 6-1, 6-4 on court four to give FGCU a 2-1 lead in the match.
On court six, Paloma Goldsmith of FGCU won a close match in two sets against Lea von Kozierowski, 6-4, 7-5. The Bears stayed alive by winning the next match as Emilia Cosatto grinded out a three set match after dropping the first set against FGCU's Ashley Matz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to make it 3-2 FGCU on the team scoreboard.
On court five, Florida Gulf Coast's Nora Svennson was able to hold off Marie Bannmeyer in a back-and-forth match in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to give FGCCU the 4-2 win. The last singles match went unfinished between Dzhastina Mikhnova and FGCU's Anjali Kotecha after Kotecha won the first set 6-1 before Mikhnova came back to win the second set, 7-5.
Up next for the Bears is a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina to play Charlotte on Thursday, Jan. 30. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
