MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team fell at home to conference-leading Samford, 3-0 Thursday night from Betts Stadium.
Mercer drops to 2-3-2 in conference play on the season with two more conference games to play.
Mercer started the game well. The Bears had more possession and scoring chances - particular;y off corner kicks - but the Bulldogs did well to slowly find their footing in the game before getting the first goal of the game.
In the 19th minute, Samford's goalie Peyton Hull punted the ball that was flicked off the head of Anne McBride where the SoCon's leading goal scorer Sam De Luca was the first to the ball and struck a left-footed shot from the left side of the box that snuck in low, to the far post to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.
Samford scored an important second goal with less than two minutes to play in the first half. A loose ball in the box found the foot of Becca Koenig who scored just her second goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the half.
Samford extended its lead in the 61st minute when Fleming Dean crossed a ball to Martha Bishop who headed home her third goal of the season to make it 3-0, Samford.
The Bears had some good looks at goal throughout the final 30 minutes with Maria Karipidis and Sydney Farr having two of the better chances but neither could keep their shot on goal as Samford earned the 3-0 win.
