Bears Host Third Annual Baba Agbaje Memorial Game This Saturday
10/24/2025 11:48:00 AM | Men's Soccer
MACON – Before the final match of the regular season at Betts Stadium, the Mercer men's soccer team will honor former Mercer student-athlete Baba Agbaje, who tragically passed in April of 2023, at the third annual Baba Agbaje Memorial Game against VMI.
Agbaje played for the Bears for four years. He made four starts and appeared in 18 matches for Mercer while also being named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2020 and 2021. Head coach Brad Ruzzo described Agbaje as an incredible person, and someone who embodied what it meant to be a Mercer Bear.
Baba was known for his contagious smile and laughter, bringing light and joy to anyone he crossed paths with. He was not just known as an athlete, but an incredible person that many people aspire to be like.
Baba's number one priority in life was to help heal the world. In honor of both his life and legacy, the Baba Agbaje Bread for Haiti Legacy Fund was created. This fund provides education, clothing and nutrition to the impoverished children of Haiti, where Baba visited many times to volunteer. Mercer's Recent Form
The Bears (4-7-4, 2-0-1 SoCon) are undefeated in four of their last five contests, with the sole loss coming from then No. 18 Georgia Southern. After a 1-1 draw with then No. 7 Furman and two blockbuster wins over ETSU and Wofford, Mercer sits tied for first in the SoCon standings with the Paladins.
Will Taylor and Eli Bannister have been a catalyst to the Bears' recent success. Taylor, a freshman midfielder, notched a goal contribution in four of his last five appearances. Bannister, a freshman defender, received SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time of his young career after recording an assist and the game-winning goal in the Bears' comeback win over ETSU.
Scouting the Keydets
VMI (2-10-3, 0-3-0 SoCon) is hunting for its first SoCon victory after three matches. The Keydets have been shut out by Furman, UNCG and Wofford to begin conference play.
Thimson Duolo, a freshman from Charlottesville, Virginia, leads VMI with three goals. Senior Zack Murphy leads the SoCon with 63 saves, the 11th-most in the nation.
