Kelsie Henton and Peyton Kreul scored for the Bears
LEXINGTON, Va. – Kelsie Henton and Peyton Kreul each scored and Avery Parker earned her first career shutout as Mercer defeated VMI 2-0 on the road Sunday afternoon from Patchin Field in Lexington, Virginia.
Mercer improves its conference record to 1-2-2 on the season and the Bears are now 2-3-1 on the road.
Mercer had the better of play for most of the game as shots were 29-12 Bears, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercer's 29 shots tied its season high.
With the no score in the 30th minute, Regan Moore sent a pass across the field to the left wing where Henton ran onto the ball, took a few touches toward goal and took a right-footed shot that beat the VMI goalie five-hole and into the back of the net to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.
The Bears would take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Mercer would continue to look for a second goal in the second half with numerous scoring chances including a shot from Anna Bachman that was tipped over the crossbar by the Keydets goalie in the 65th minute.
Then, in the 78th minute Morganne Eikelbarner dashed through the midfield and played a through ball to Kreul who ran onto the ball and took a first time shot that beat the keeper near post to extend Mercer's lead to 2-0.
VMI nearly got one goal back in the 87th minute off a Mercer deflection, as a VMI attacker was in alone inside the box, but Parker got a foot on the ball to make the save and preserve the shutout.
