
Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Season At Wofford Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Mercer women's tennis team concluded its fall season at the Wofford Terrier Invite Nov. 7-9 from Spartanburg, South Carolina.
In doubles matches, after opening the tournament by falling to UNC Asheville's Angelina Hug and Sofia Edmundson, 7-5, Mercer's Ines Homberg and Marina Quinones responded by defeating Arili Boshoff and Emma Shasteen of Gardner-Webb, 6-4. Then, the pair went on to beat Grace Katzman and Roxana Valdez of Presbyterian, 7-5.
Jelena Gojkovic and Valentine Abide Talaki went 2-1 in their three doubles matches. They earned wins over Terezia Barianakova and Che Nel of Kennesaw State, 6-4. Then, they defeated Wofford's Hokualohi Lui and Axelle Van Beurden, 6-4.
Sofiya Tsitavets and Tea Zivic went 1-2 in their three doubles matches with a 6-4 win over Presbyterian's Grace Katzman and Roxana Valdez.
Mercer's Marina de Diego Quinones and Valentine Abide Talaki each won their singles flight to highlight singles play for the Bears.
Marina de Diego Quinones started her flight with a win over Emma Shasteen of Gardner-Webb, 6-1, 6-4. She then went on to defeat Ema Barianakova of Kennesaw State in a tightly played match that went three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 14-12. In the championship match, Clemson's Talia Neilson-Gatenby unfortunately had to withdraw against de Diego Quinones before the match began.
As for Valentine Abide Talaki she earned a bye in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal match against Wofford's Stout Grace. Abide Talaki earned a 6-4, 6-3 win to advance to the championship match where she defeated Luciana Parrilli of Presbyterian after dropping the first set, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. Abide Talaki also won a match on Saturday against Clemson's Kinsey Crawford, 6-3, 7-5.
Marie Bannmeyer reached the semifinals of her flight after defeating Presbyterian's Mary Ellen Longmire, 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 in the quarterfinals.
