Greensboro, N.C. – Despite a career-best nine saves by Henry Hampshaw, the Mercer men's soccer team lost its regular season finale, 3-0, to the No. 21 UNC Greensboro Spartans on Saturday night.
The Bears (5-8-4, 3-1-1 SoCon) took the ranked Spartans into the half deadlocked at zero. Hampshaw went into the locker room with five saves. The sophomore goalkeeper would add four more in the second half to set a new career-high at the Division I level.
UNCG (10-3-4, 3-2-0 SoCon) opened the scoring in the 67th minute. Aranud Tattevin would double the Spartans' lead, and secure a brace, by converting a penalty at the 78:11 mark. Steven Hernandez scored the final goal to cap off UNCG's 3-0 win in the 86th minute.
With the conclusion of the regular season, Mercer looks ahead to the Southern Conference tournament. The Bears secured a top two seed with their 2-0 win over VMI last Saturday and earned the rights to host the quarter and semifinals at Betts Stadium.
As a benefit of earning home-field advantage, Mercer does not take the pitch until its semi-final match on November 9. Betts Stadium will be the venue of the SoCon's quarterfinal match between No. 3 UNCG and No. 6 VMI on Friday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The Bears will take on the winner the following Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
