MACON – Mercer got a pair of solid outings from sophomore right-handers Grace Roark and Gabby Ellis on the way to a series-opening doubleheader split with visiting Binghamton on Friday evening at Sikes Field. The Bearcats used a pair of solo homers to grab the series opener, 2-1, but the Bears evened up the weekend with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Â
The Bears (15-13) have now captured three of their last five outings, and improved to 7-6 at home this season with Friday's late win over the Bearcats. Binghamton (13-9) has dropped three of its last five outings, and will wrap up a season-opening 23-game stretch away from home with Saturday's rubber game.
Â
Roark (3-4) sat down the first 12 batters she faced before surrendering a solo homer to start the fifth. She struck out a pair of batters and yielded just two hits and a lone walk across her team-best fourth complete game of the campaign.
Â
Ellis (5-1) was superb in the nightcap, striking out two and allowing three hits and a lone unearned run on the way to her first complete-game outing of the season.
