QUEENS, N.Y. – The Mercer men's lacrosse fell to St. John's in their final matchup before conference play on Saturday, March 15 at Belson Stadium.

The Mercer offense put up a stellar performance recording 16 total goals, six of them coming in the first quarter. Freshman Will Zylatra led the way for the Bears with six goals on the afternoon, a career high. Dillon Bush put up five goals of his own along with a goal each from Luke Fox, Jack Sullivan, Michael Frederick, Jackson Hirschy and Christopher Cappelmann. On the defensive side for Mercer, Thomas Venzie picked up six groundballs and caused two turnovers. Between the pipes, senior goalkeeper Rand Paddack posted 14 saves against the Red Storm.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first quarter was a scoring party between the two squads. Mercer got up early after a goal from Cappelmann just 10 seconds into play. 12 goals were exchanged after that between both teams, scored by Frederick, Bush, Sullivan, Zylastra and Fox for the Bears to force the score to 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Both offenses remained hot heading into the second quarter with Hirschy striking first at the 13:11 mark off of an assist from Jack Sullivan. Bush found his groove in the second quarter recording three back-to-back goals to give Mercer an 11-10 advantage over the Red Storm. However, St. John's responded with two goals of their own to gain the lead before the half.
Scoring started to slow down in the third quarter but not before Zylstra opened it up with two goals taking back the lead 13-12. The Red Storm responded with three goals of their own beginning to pull away from St. John's.
The Red Storm entered the fourth quarter with a three point lead and was able to not let the Bears come within two goals for the remaining of the game, securing the 20-16 win in Queens.

TOP BEARS

Jack Sullivan recorded four assists on the afternoon.
The powerhouse duo of Bush and Zylstra put up a combined 11 goals against the Red Storm.
Venzie continues to be a standout defender putting up six groundballs and two turnovers.

NOTABLES

Bush keeps his scoring streak alive, scoring at least one goal in all nine contests this season.
The Red Storm broke a five-game losing streak.

The Bears will take an off weekend before beginning conference play back home at Five Start Stadium on Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m. for Alumni Weekend.
