MACON – Mercer surrendered just two games apiece in winning a pair of doubles matches, and then breezed to a trio of singles victories on the way to a 4-0 shutout of visiting James Madison on Monday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Â
The shutout, which took just less than two hours to complete, snapped a two-match skid for the Bears (5-6) who improved to 4-2 on their home court with the decision as well. The Dukes (5-6) have now dropped two-straight matches, and fell to 2-5 away from Harrisonburg, Va., with the setback as well.
Â
MU's No. 2 tandem of Marceau Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic yielded the first two games of their matchup with Aurelien Schmitt and Edson Sanchez, but caught fire after that and eventually turned in a 6-2 decision. The story was much of the same on Court No. 1 as Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod'Abalo Isak Padio broke a 2-2 tie by winning four-straight games to secure a similar 6-2 triumph.
Â
The Bears put a second team point up on the board via Fouilhoux's win by retirement at No. 5 singles, then got within earshot of their fifth win of the season on Tom Hagelauer's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Padio put the final touches on the team victory with a 6-1, 6-2 ouster of Zachary Fleishman on Court No. 2.
Â
Mercer will be back in action again on Saturday when it opens up Southern Conference play at Chattanooga (10-7, 1-0 SoCon). First serves are scheduled for noon at the UTC Tennis Center.
