MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will break the seal on the Southern Conference portion of its 2024-25 regular season schedule on Sunday when the Bears travel to southeast Tennessee to take on Chattanooga at the UTC Tennis Center. First serves are scheduled for noon.
Fans unable to make the trip to the Volunteer State can still follow all of the action in progress for free via a live results link provided by the UTC athletics department.
Mercer (5-6, 0-0 SoCon) snapped a two-match skid by making quick work of visiting James Madison on Monday afternoon. The Bears rolled through doubles play in that outing to grab the early lead on the team scoreboard, and then captured three singles matches in straight-sets to close out the 4-0 shutout.
The Mocs (10-8, 1-1) had their two-match winning skein snapped with a 7-0 loss at league-leading Samford on Friday, but have compiled a 7-1 mark at the UTC Tennis Center this spring, and will ride a six-match home win streak into Sunday's outing with the Bears.
UTC leads the all-time series with Mercer, 10-7, and has captured three of the last four series matchups, including a 4-1 triumph over the Orange & Black in last season's Southern Conference Tournament. Mercer had registered a 5-2 home win over Chattanooga 11 days prior to that postseason meeting.
The Orange & Black is still led on the doubles court by junior tandem Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod'Abalo Isak Padio who have rattled off an 18-8 mark in doubles action this season, including a 6-4 clip during the spring dual meet season. Padio has raked in a team-best 16 singles wins in his first season in the Orange & Black, while he and fellow junior Nemanja Stefanovic have tallied a team-best five wins on the singles courts during the spring.
Junior Cortland Grove boasts a team-best 17 singles victories for the Mocs, and has won seven of his last 10 singles matchups heading into the weekend. Grove has logged a 4-2 record in the No. 3 position, of which he occupied in Friday's setback to Samford, but has also conjured up five victories at No. 4 singles in the Spring. UTC's doubles pair of senior Gabriel Castillo and sophomore Jakub Jupa have compiled a 10-4 record on Court No. 1 in regular season action.
