CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Marceau Fouilhoux finished off Kristof Kincses in straight sets to knot things up on the team scoreboard, and Amen Prince Gandonou completed the comeback effort for Mercer with a three-set win over Cortland Grove as the Bears won their Southern Conference opener for the third-straight year with a 4-3 triump at Chattanooga on Sunday.
Â
It was the second win in the last three series matchups for Mercer (6-6, 1-0 SoCon), but its first road win in the series with the Mocs since a 4-3 nailbiter on April 11, 2021. The setback snapped a six-match home win streak for Chattanooga (10-9, 1-2).
Â
Fouilhoux and doubles mate Nemanja Stefanovic breezed to a 6-2 win over Grove/Kincses, and the Bears picked up what would be a crucial doubles point when Esteban Davila Gasse and Howell Burns teamed up for a 6-4 victory over Ryan Mudre and Jaxon Lamb on Court No. 3.
Â
Chattanooga answered with a vengeance, however, securing three out of the first four completed singles matches to storm ahead 3-2 on the team scoreboard. Fouilhoux came back to win his opening set with Kincses with a 7-5 tiebreaker, then finished off the Hungary native with a 6-0 second set.
Â
Gandonou, who has delivered the match clincher on two other occasions this season, posted a 6-3 win in his opening set with Grove, but the Chattanooga junior knotted things back up with a 6-3 victory of his own in the second set. Knotted up at three wins apiece in the deciding third set, Gandonou raked in two-straight games to put the Bears on the cusp, and then split the final two games to help the Orange & Black prevail.
Â
Mercer is back in action again on Thursday when the Bears suit up to host SoCon rival East Tennessee State (8-5, 2-0) at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission is free.
