
Bears Unable To Hold Lead In 16-14 Loss To Jacksonville

Caroline Glus and Gabby Brisbin led Mercer with four goals each
MACON, Ga. - Gabby Brisbin and Caroline Glus each scored four goals but Mercer was unable to hold onto a fourth quarter lead and dropped a 16-14 contest to Jacksonville at home on Wednesday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
Florida led 11-9 after three quarters, but Jacksonville outscored the Bears 7-3 in the fourth quarter to escape with the non-conference win.
The Dolphins, who entered the game third nationally in draw control percentage at 64.1 percent, won the draw control battle 22-11. Shots were 33-29, Jacksonville and the Dolphins held a 28-22 shots on goal advantage.
Both teams were a bit turnover prone throughout then day as Jacksonville had 17 turnovers and Mercer 16. Abby Soltys led Mercer with three caused turnovers as the Bears finished the game with 11 caused turnovers.
Brisbin's four goals were a single-game career high and Glus' four goals marked her fourth straight game with at least four goals. Abby Morrison had two goals and led Mercer with six draw controls.
Kayla Casey made 11 saves in goal and had a .440 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams played well defensively in a low-scoring first quarter. Neither team's offense got many quality looks at goal and had a few turnovers as well in a first quarter that had just two goals, one for each team.
Jacksonville went on to take a 5-2 lead midway through the second quarter. However, the Bears answered with three straight goals with Sofia D'Angelo scoring the first and Brisbin getting the other two. The Dolphins scored with less than one minute to go in the half to take a 6-5 lead into the break.
After a quick Jacksonville goal in the opening minute of the second half, Mercer once again went on a 3-0 scoring run to take an 8-7 lead. D'Angelo scored her second goal of the game with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter and the Bears took an 11-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
After Caroline Glus gave Mercer a 12-10 lead with under 11 minutes to play, Jacksonville would go on to score the next four goals in a four minute span to take a 14-12 lead with more than six minutes to go.Â
Glus' fourth goal of the game brought Mercer within one at 14-13, but the Dolphins were able to score two more goals to close out the game.

Mercer is back at home to start conference play on Saturday, March 29Â to take on Wofford. First draw is set for 2 p.m.
