
Bears Roll To Commanding 22-8 Win Over Wofford In Coach Eustace's 100th Career Win

Sofia D'Angelo led Mercer with six points
MACON, Ga. - Sofia D'Angelo had a career high six points to lead Mercer to a resounding 22-8 win over Wofford in the Big South opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
The win was the 100th career win for Mercer head coach Samantha Eustace. Coach Eustace who is in her 10th year leading the Bears is now 100-68 as head coach with Mercer.
Mercer's 22 goals and 31 points were a season high. The Bears scored at least five goals in all four quarters and outshot the Terriers 41-14 including a 31-9 shots on goal advantage in a strong overall performance.
Mercer also played well defensively as Wofford had 23 turnovers with the Bears causing 12 of them. Wofford's Bria Foley entered the game second in the Big South with 5.1 points per game, but the Bears slowed her down to just two points on the day.
D'Angelo had three goals and three assists on her way to a 6-point game. Gabby Brisbin and Caroline Glus each scored four goals to lead Mercer offensively.
Abby Soltys led Mercer defensively with a great game as she had four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Freshman Ayla Galloway was solid in the draw circle as she had a career high 11 draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brisbin and Glus scored less than one minute apart to give Mercer an early 3-1 lead. Ansley Walters and Sami Lowinger each scored in the final minute of the first quarter to give the Bears a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
Wofford's leading offensive player, Bria Foley scored twice in the opening minutes of the second quarter to bring the Terriers within one as Mercer led 5-4. The Bears would then go on a 4-0 run with D'Angelo scoring the last two goals during the scoring run and suddenly Mercer went up 9-4. Mercer would take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
A strong third quarter helped give the Bears control of the game as Mercer scored the first five goals of the third quarter to take a 15-5 lead. Brisbin and Glus combined to score four of the goals during the run.Â
The Terriers couldn't slow down the Bears in the fourth quarter which was Mercer's highest scoring quarter with seven goals. Krissy Rael and Maya Maldonado each scored twice as the Bears cruised to a 22-8 win to earn a 1-0 start in conference play.
