CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior tandem Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Amen Prince Gandonou toughed out a 7-5 win in the featured doubles match to clinch the early point for Mercer and the Bears breezed to five straight-sets singles victories to fuel a 6-1 rout of The Citadel on Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
Â
The win helped the Bears (8-6, 3-0 SoCon) tack up their first 3-0 start to conference action since the 2018 campaign, while also giving the Orange & Black its fourth-straight overall victory – its longest winning skein since early in the 2023 campaign. It was the seventh-straight loss for The Citadel (4-23, 0-6) who remained winless in Southern Conference action.
Â
Senior Marceau Fouilhoux teamed up with junior Nemanja Stefanovic to post a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but The Citadel evened things up minutes later when Reece Beckendorf and Anthony Osipov came out on the better end of a 7-3 tiebreaker on Court No. 2.
Â
Gandonou and Padio delivered the goods, however, with a 7-5 win over Noah Van Dyke and Tucker Hendrix on Court No. 1.
Â
The Bears all but coasted through singles competition, yielding just four games or less in four of their five victories, while Gandonou won 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Â
Mercer will be back in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Greenville, S.C., to take on SoCon nemesis Furman (6-11, 2-1) at the Mickel Tennis Center. Start time has been scheduled for 1 p.m.
