GREENVILLE, S.C. – Junior tandem Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Amen Prince Gandonou tacked up a 7-4 tiebreaker win in the feature match to finish out a doubles sweep for visiting Mercer, and the Bears followed with three quick wins in singles play to fuel a 4-1 win over Southern Conference nemesis Furman on Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
It was the fifth-straight win for the Bears (9-6, 4-0 SoCon) who now boast the program's longest winning skein since a string of five-straight victories late in the 2018 campaign. The setback snapped an eight-game series win streak for the Paladins (6-12, 2-2) whose last loss in the series came back amid the 2018 campaign.
Mercer yielded just six games in raking in wins at both Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but Padio/Gandonou added some extra flair by coming out on the good end of a 7-4 tiebreaker in the featured doubles matchup.
Padio and junior Nemanja Stefanovic captured straight-sets wins at Nos. 2 and 1 singles, respectively, to give MU a 3-0 advantage on the team scoreboard, but Furman got on the board minutes later when John Rado walked away from Court No. 3 with a straight-sets win himself.
That momentum would not last long, however, as Tom Hagelauer battled back from an opening-set loss, as well as a 3-0 deficit in the third set, to topple Nicolas Dispas 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Bears are back at home again on Sunday when they bunker down to battle SoCon rival UNC Greensboro (8-11, 2-3). Start time has been slated for 11 a.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center and admission is free.
