MACON, Ga. – Sydney Farr scored twice and Mercer defeated Winthrop 4-2 on Thursday evening from Betts Stadium. The win is Mercer's fourth straight.
Mercer outshot Winthrop 25-12, including an 11-7 shots on goal advantage. Payton Nutzman and Morganne Eikelbarner each had one goal and one assist for the Bears. Redshirt freshman goalie Avery Parker got her first career start in goal for the Bears and made five saves.
The first goal of the game came less than three minutes into the game as Sydney Farr got past her defender down the left wing and took a shot inside the box that beat the Winthrop goalie to give Mercer an early 1-0 lead.
Mercer found a second goal in the 29th minute as Nutzman dribbled past her defender on the left side of the box and took a left-footed shot that beat the keeper to the far right post for the goal. Mercer would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Winthrop cut its deficit in half in the 60th minute on a cross into the box that was redirected into the net. The Bears responded two minutes later as Nutzman crossed a ball from the left wing to the top of the 6-yard box where Eikelbarner redirected it out of the air with her right foot and into the goal to once again give the Bears a two-goal lead.
Mercer's fourth goal of the game came in the 74th minute as Kelsie Henton sent a long pass over the top of the Winthrop defense where Farr ran under it, took on the Eagles' defenders and place a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal for her second of the game to give Mercer a 4-1 lead.
Witnhrop got one goal back in the 87th minute on a corner kick that took an unfortunate bounce of a Mercer player and into the goal.
Mercer closed out the game to earn the 4-2 win with one more non-conference game to play before the start of conference play.
