MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Despite freshman Phillips Swift turning in the lowest score of his collegiate career, the Mercer men's golf team fell in the rankings and finished seventh of 13 teams in the Sandestin Collegiate Classic.
"[Phillips'] round carried us today, and it's awesome to have both him and Cole finish in the top 10," said head coach Jason Payne. "We had a good start as a team, but there were too many bogies on the final nine holes that kept us from having a chance at the trophy."
Swift has been stellar to begin his career as a Bear. The Macon native had the third-most birdies (16) out of 80 players to secure a fourth-place individual finish. The Stratford Academy product has finished five of his six rounds at the collegiate level in the red.
Cole Hanson ended the Sandestin Collegiate Classic tied for ninth place, sitting six-under after 36 holes. The graduate student had five birdies with only one blemish on his scorecard for the first 15 holes. However, Hanson would lose three strokes on the next two holes and finish with a 70.Â
The Bears finished the tournament with 62 total birdies, the most out of the field. Mercer tied with Middle Tennessee State with a stroke average of 4.73 on all Par 5s. Henry Robards finished tied for third with an average score of 4.50 on Par 5s and Hanson finished with the third-best score of a 3.78 on Par 4s.
Mercer is back in action on Monday, September 29. The Bears travel to Columbia, South Carolina for the inaugural Bryan Brothers Collegiate at the Solina Golf Club hosted by South Carolina.
