The Bears opened their season with the Golfweek Fall Challenge, finishing in 8th of 13 teams. This past week Mercer competed in the Sandestin Collegiate Classic, falling to 7th of 13 schools after finding itself in the top three during the second and third rounds.
"There have been some really strong performances from the top half of our lineup to allow us to contend at points in our last two events," said head coach Jason Payne. "We need our four and five guys to step up and provide some good rounds to allow us to be in contention in those final 18 holes. We might have to battle through some weather, but if we can limit our bogies, I believe we can remain at the top of this field."
Mercer finished the Sandestin Collegiate Classic with the most birdies (62) of the 13 competing teams. However, the Bears also finished with the third-most bogeys (46).Â
Phillips Swift continued to impress in his first season at the collegiate level. The freshman from Macon, Georgia finished 4th individually out of 80 players at the Sandestin. Swift turned in the third-most birdies with 16, including seven on the third day of competition.
The Bryan Brothers Collegiate has a loaded field of 15 teams including two Southeastern Conference opponents and three Atlantic Coast conference schools. Headlining the field is LSU, host team South Carolina and Augusta coming off a NCAA Regional appearance in 2024.
