MACON – Visiting Georgia Southern got the better of the action in doubles play to rake in the early point, and then rattled off three quick singles victories in straight sets, on the way to a 7-0 win over the Bears on Friday afternoon at the Copelan Tennis Complex.
Â
The setback snapped a four-match win streak in home openers for the Bears (0-3) who were facing their first unranked foe of the spring campaign. It was the season opener for the Eagles (1-0) who improved to 30-5 all-time against the Orange & Black, while also tacking up their seventh-straight series win.
Â
Willy Mirarchi and Albert Saar battled back from a 2-1 deficit to win 6-3 on Court No. 2 and provide the point-clincher in doubles play. MU's duo of Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Nemanja Stefanovic were ahead 5-3 in the featured doubles match when that portion of the afternoon ended.
Â
The Eagles finished off the team victory with quick wins at Nos. 3, 6 and 4 singles, respectively, then made it a 5-0 lead on the scoreboard with Albert Saar's 6-1, 7-6 triumph over Padio on Court No. 2. Amen Prince Gandonou and Stefanovic both fell on the wrong end of third-set tiebreakers to provide the final.
Â
The Bears will be back in action again on February 8 when they close out a short two-match home stand against Jacksonville State (2-0) at the Copelan Tennis Complex. Start time has been scheduled for 10 a.m.
