KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and sophomore Shingo Masuda were on the better end of a 6-4 decision in the featured doubles matchup, but home-standing Tennessee had all of the answers for the remainder of the afternoon on the way to a 4-0 shutout of the visiting Bears on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
Â
The setback wrapped up a season-longest five-match stretch away from home for the Bears (4-9, 0-1 SoCon) who will return to Macon on Tuesday to take on conference rival Furman at 2:30 p.m. It was the second win of the day for the Volunteers (9-11) who took a 4-3 decision from Alabama earlier Sunday.
Â
Tennessee captured similar 6-3 decisions at both Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to clinch the early doubles point, but Padio/Masuda still had enough time to finish off their 6-4 victory on Court No. 1 to send UT's Shion Itusaki and Ethan Muza to their second setback of the day.
Â
The hosts got to work quickly in singles play, yielding just 10 games in capturing wins on Court Nos. 3, 4 and 6 to clinch the team win. Prior to the remaining matches being abandoned, Masuda had just battled back from an opening-set loss to Alejandro Moreno with a 6-3 win in the second set at No. 2 singles.
