Marquette Offense Too Much For Visiting Mercer

MARQUETTE, Wisc. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team could not keep up with Marquette's electic offense on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee at Valley Fields as the Golden Eagles defeated the Bears 21-12.

Mercer's offense was led by senior attackman Michael Frederick who came to life in the second half to record a hat trick and reach a career milestone of 100 points. Freshman midfielder Nick Church and sophomore attackman Will Zylstra posted two goals a piece while freshman attackman Jonathon Benerofe found the back of the net for the first time in his career. Dillon Bush, Luke Fox, Chance Haynie and Connor Corkill were responsible for the remaining goals for the Bears. On the defensive side, junior defender Thomas Venzie caused two turnovers and scooped up three ground balls on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Church got scoring going on the day after just 30 seconds into play. Marquette then responded with four back-to-back goals. Instantly making a statement that the game was going to be high scoring on both sides. Benerofe and Corkill followed those up with goals and the Golden Eagles found the back of the net three more times until Zylstra closed out scoring in the first quarter with 1:00 on the clock.
Marquette found their groove in the second quarter only allowing two Mercer goals to open up the second quarter and then went on to score seven-straight goals before the halftime buzzer.
Mercer fought back in the third quarter scoring five goals, including a hat trick from Frederick but the Golden Eagles were able to add two of their own to maintain a strong lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Bears were able to come away with another goal in the fourth quarter but the damage had been done from the Golden Eagles who came away with their third win of the season.

Frederick recorded a second-half hat trick.
Benerofe scored his first career goal.
Venzie led the defense once again with two caused turnovers.

NOTABLES

Frederick reached a career milestone of 100 points with his third goal of the day.
Mercer moves to 3-4 on the year and Marquette advances to 3-3.

The Bears return to Macon after two back-to-back road games to host St. John's in their final test before conference play on Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m. at Five Star Stadium.
