Porter, Simmons Log Top-5 Finishes At Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA – Sophomore Jayla Simmons registered a mark of 5.82 meters on the way to a fifth-place finish in the Long Jump, while Iris Porter crossed in fifth place with a time of 17:34.27 in the 5000m Run, to highlight the performances for the Mercer track & field team on Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Porter bested 35 other competitors in the 5000m Run and was just 36 seconds off of the pace of the race winner, while Simmons was just 0.18 meters off of the winning mark (6.00m) turned in by Middle Tennessee State's Xarya Udoumana.

Four Bears registered at least one personal-best mark in their respective disciplines in Atlanta, including sophomore Naomi Pierce who grabbed a new personal record in both the 200m Dash and the Long Jump. Simmons's time of 24.95 in the 200m Dash is the ninth-fastest mark registered by a Southern Conference competitor this season.

Mercer is back in action again next weekend when the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers head to North Carolina for the Charlotte Invitational.
