Michael Ellis assumed the role of Assistant Athletics Director for Operations in August of 2012. In his role, Ellis serves as the primary operations contact for 18 varsity sports. Previously, Ellis served as Director of Operations for the department and before that as Director of Basketball Operations for current head men’s coach Bob Hoffman.
Ellis was a two-year letter winner for Mercer Men’s basketball team (2007-2009), after sitting out the 2006-2007 campaign after transferring from UNC-Asheville. While at UNCA, Ellis earned the Big South Conference “Freshman of the Year” award.
Among the many good memories Ellis lists during his time in Orange and Black, he says that the top was during the 2007-2008 season when Mercer topped No. 18-ranked Southern California on the Trojans’ home floor. A close second came the next year when MU knocked off both Alabama and Auburn on the road in the same week.
Upon graduation, Ellis worked in the athletic department as a graduate assistant under current Mercer Senior Associate Athletics Director Sybil Blalock. Ellis handled a variety of duties at a GA, working in everything from game day operations to assisting with eligibility, and performing administrative duties to working with the volumous needs of hosting the A-Sun Basketball Championships.
Ellis enjoyed an outstanding high school career playing at South Iredell and Fork Union Military Academy. As a senior, Elllis averaged 31 points and 10 rebounds per game and went on to be named “2A Mr. Basketball” in North Carolina. Ellis also was a three time Conference Player of the Year and earned first team all-state his senior season. Ellis’ number 11 jersey was retired at South Iredell following his senior season.
A 2009 graduate of Mercer (with a business management degree), Ellis completed his Masters of Business Administration from Mercer in December of 2010. Ellis is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Higher Educational Leadership and is expected to finish his doctoral work in December of 2014.
