Scouting Davidson
The Wildcats enter Tuesday's contest with a 4-1 record and have won three consecutive games, including two at the Tire Pros Invitational. Following a 95-78 loss to Clemson on Nov. 17, Davison turned around and walloped Missouri, 70-55, then edged Arizona State, 68-60. Most recently, the Wildcats won 79-57 against Charlotte.
Jack Gibbs is averaging 21.0 points in four games played while Peyton Aldridge is averaging 19.8 points in five games played. Aldridge also leads the team with 38 rebounds as five Wildcats in all have registered over 20 rebounds to date.
Series History
Mercer and Davidson will meet for the third time in series history Tuesday with the Wildcats having claimed the first two meetings. Davidson edged Mercer, 77-71, last November at Davidson and the Wildcats also claimed an 80-50 win back in 1970. This marks the first of three Atlantic 10 opponents for the Bears this season (George Mason, La Salle).
Defense Looks to Return to Stifling ways
Mercer's defense has been suffocating this season and that has been problematic for opponents. The Bears, ranked 25th in the nation in field goal percentage defense entering this week's games (37.1 percent) have not allowed four out of six opponents to shoot 40 percent or better against Mercer this season.
Not Just a Mercer Thing, It's a SoCon Thing
Mercer's scoring defense is currently ranked 33rd nationally as opponents are averaging 62.3 points per game on the Bears entering this week's contests but that does not seem to be limited just to the Bears. In fact, stellar scoring defenses are prevalent around the Southern Conference as, while Mercer is ranked 33rd nationally, the Bears are second in the league.
The Missouri Valley Conference (5) and the Big East (3) are the only mid-major leagues with more teams ranked in the top 35 nationally in scoring defense than the Southern Conference (3). Also representing the SoCon in the category is UNCG (ranked 10th, 58.0 ppg).
