Mercer Defeats Portland State, 5-1, For First Win

Stella Preston tosses complete game, limits Vikings to one run
MACON, Ga. – Freshman right-hander Stella Preston tossed a five-hit complete game in her collegiate debut to help Mercer defeat Portland State, 5-1, for its first victory of the year Saturday at Sikes Field.
A fifth-inning solo home run was the only blemish on a stellar seven innings of work by Preston, who struck out four and did not allow a walk. Portland State (0-4) committed four errors to aid Mercer (1-2) in pulling away with a three-run fifth inning.
Â
The Bears earned their first two runs thanks to smart base running; Danielle Castleberry scored on a passed ball in the third and Taylor Miller stole second before eventually scoring on a groundout by Emma Andrew.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Stella Preston delivered just the performance her team needed after a tough opening day left the Bears' hungry for a win. After allowing a leadoff double to start the game, Preston retired 11 consecutive batters, never allowing the Vikings to gain momentum.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Six and four. Mercer stole six bases – two by Meghan Rud and one apiece by Kate Buckland, Danielle Castleberry, Miller and Andrew – to set itself up for success offensively throughout Saturday's contest. Portland State did itself no favors either, committing four errors. Only two of Mercer's five runs were earned.
