Megan Bilgri notches complete game; Mercer wins second straight
MACON, Ga. – A day after surrendering five total home runs in a pair of losses, Mercer used two of its own and stifled a stout Dayton offense to win its second straight game in the Mercer Invitational Saturday at Sikes Field.
Â
The Bears defeated Dayton, 4-0, as Megan Bilgri (1-0) tossed a complete-game shutout and allowed only one Flyer to pass first base over seven innings. Taylor Rodgers and Abby Walsh provided the offensive fireworks; Rodgers hit a solo home run – the second of her career – in the fourth inning and Walsh put the game away for good with a two-run shot in the sixth.
Â
An RBI-double by Quirisa Mauga in the first inning rounded out a two-hit performance and impressive opening weekend of play for the junior third baseman as well.
Â
Mercer finished its season-opening home invitational tournament with a 2-2 mark, having earned wins over Dayton and Portland State on the second day of play. All four visiting programs will play one more game Sunday, however, Mercer will not.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
While the offense looked stout against a pair of Dayton pitchers, Megan Bilgri controlled the pulse of Saturday afternoon's contest. The junior cruised through seven innings of work, surrendering five hits and no walks. It was Bilgri's third appearance of the early season. No other Bear has more than one.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Four of Mercer's six total hits were for extra bases against the Flyers. Mauga had a pair of doubles and Rodgers and Walsh rounded out the four extra-baggers with their long balls.
