Four runs over the final two innings give the Bears’ their third straight win
Â
After squandering a 6-0 lead in the third inning, Mercer (3-2) scored four runs over the final two frames to earn its third straight victory following a 0-2 start to the season. Creighton fell to 1-5 overall.
Â
Jill McElderry earned the win relief as she limited the Bluejays to only one hit over the final 4.1 innings of play and struck out a trio. The bats of Caroline Taylor and Megan Lane provided the early fireworks in the form of home runs, helping Mercer score six times in the top of the second inning. Lane, who hit a three-run long ball, led the team with three RBIs.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Rud not only had the game-winning hit, but also filled her individual stat line in the process. She went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and three stolen bases. It was her third multi-hit game of the early season as she is batting .579 overall.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Four. Mercer capitalized on some important situational hitting opportunities with four two-out RBIs against Creighton. Lane's three-run home run, which put Mercer up 6-0, came with two out as did Maxine Rodriguez's RBI-double to left field in the seventh inning.
Â
COACH DEFEO'S TAKE
"Our lineup did a great job of getting ahead with the six runs in the second inning. When we gave up the lead, our offense stuck with the game plan and came right back to tack on runs when we could. Aggressive base running helped us take advantage of some clutch hits by Caroline [Taylor], [Megan] Lane, [Meghan] Rud and Maxine [Rodriguez].
Â
"Jill [McElderry] crushed it in relief. She came in and owned the opposing batters – I am not sure there was a single ball hit hard off her. That was the confidence we needed to come away with the win."
