Maxine Rodriguez goes 2-for-3 in the loss
AUBURN, Ala. – Mercer saw its four-game win streak snapped as it fell to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), 4-3, on the second day of the Plainsman Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field.
Â
The game featured four lead changes throughout with SIUE (7-2) taking the final one with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mercer's Taylor Rodgers came through with a two-out, pinch-hit double in the top of the seventh to make things interesting, but the Bears (4-3) could not bring home the tying run.
Â
A first-inning home run gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead, only to be topped by a two-RBI double from Maxine Rodriguez in the second that gave Mercer its first lead. The two teams traded single runs over the next three half-frames before SIUE scored the game-winner later in the fifth.
Â
Jill McElderry (1-2) took the loss for the Bears in a relief appearance for Rodriguez, who lasted only two innings as the starter. SIUE's game-winning run came after McElderry issued a pair of two-out walks, followed by an RBI-double off Megan Bilgri after another Mercer pitching change.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
While she did not have her best start in the circle, Rodriguez was one of the lone focal points in the Bears' lineup. The senior went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs on her double in the second frame. The performance also marked Rodriguez's second two-hit game in the last three contests.
COACH DEFEO'S TAKE
"We fought hard every inning all the way until the final out today. A game like this is an opportunity for us to grow as a team – there were positives throughout and we will continue to build."
