Bears Fall to Bulldogs, 12-10, in Home Opener

MACON, Ga. – Erica Coyne and Kate Leone each scored a season-high four goals, but it was not enough on Sunday afternoon as the Mercer women's lacrosse team narrowly fell to Fresno State, 12-10.

Lindsey Zeltwanger also scored a goal and added a season-high four assists, while Meghan Segreti notched a goal and an assist to round out Mercer's scoring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State scored the first two goals of the game, but Coyne forced the Bulldogs' goalie to turn the ball over and was then fouled, giving the junior a free-position shot with an open net. She scored and cut Fresno State's lead to 2-1 with 21:42 left in the first half. After another goal from each team, Mercer rattled off three unanswered goals in less than two minutes to take a 5-3 lead with 4:56 remaining in the period. The Bulldogs added a goal in the final minute of the half to cut Mercer's lead to 5-4 at halftime.

The Bulldogs were unstoppable in the first10 minutes of the second half, scoring six goals and taking a 10-5 lead with 20:42 left to play. Leone and Coyne each added a goal to slow Fresno State down and cut the lead to 10-7, but the Bulldogs scored just over a minute later to make it 11-7 with 16:46 remaining. Segreti found the back of the net with 12:00 on the clock and after another Bulldog goal, Mercer was still down four, 12-8, with 11:02 to play. The Bears kept fighting and scored two more goals in the final 10 minutes of play but were unable to rally for the win as Fresno State held on to its 12-10 advantage as the clock wound down.
