3/17/2017 7:48:00 PM | Softball
MACON, Ga. – Freshman Stella Preston allowed only two hits, none until the fifth inning, and Taylor Rodgers was 2-for-2 including a home run as Mercer topped Eastern Illinois, 3-1, as part of the Mercer Bears Classic at Sikes Field Friday afternoon.
Â
Preston (4-5) sat down 13 consecutive batters before allowing a hit – a solo home run that proved to be the only run of the game for Eastern Illinois (13-13). Mercer, which had a 1-0 lead at the time, responded with another run in the bottom of the fifth and then Rodgers added an insurance run for the Bears in the sixth with a solo home run.
Â
Mercer (13-17), which has never lost to Eastern Illinois in now five meetings, never trailed in the game.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Stella Preston gets the nod for a dominating performance in the circle, allowing only two hits in 23 batters faced. She fanned four batters and did not allow a walk in her seven innings pitched. This marked the third consecutive game Preston has struck out at least four batters.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The two hits allowed in the game by Mercer ties a season low. The Bears also allowed only two hits in a win over Evansville on Feb. 17.
Â
PITCHERS OF RECORD
"Stella did a great job today. She had a perfect game goping until the fifth and then just had one missed pitch. After that she kept them off for a while – their other hit was not good – so to throw a two-hitter was excellent by her."
