Big Inning Powers Mercer to First SoCon Win
3/25/2017 6:22:00 PM | Softball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer used a six-run fourth inning to power its way to the team's first Southern Conference victory and a doubleheader split as the Bears claimed a 7-1 win over Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at Sikes Field.
Â
The Bears (15-20, 1-1 Southern) took advantage of three Chattanooga (10-21, 1-1) errors in the game, two of which came in the big inning.
Â
Meghan Rud (28th) and Taylor Miller (24th) each swiped a bag and added to their SoCon individual lead in the category as the pair are 1-2 in the conference, respectively.
Â
Megan Bilgri (6-4) was credited with the win after allowing only one run on five hits while striking out three. She did not allow a walk. Stella Preston (3) was credited with the save.
Â
The rubber game between the two teams is set for 1 p.m. Sunday (March 26) at Sikes Field. Sunday's game will be Military Appreciation Day.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Caroline Taylor came up big when it mattered for Mercer. The junior smacked a two-run double to start the big inning for the Bears in her 1-for-3 day. She scored shortly thereafter as Danielle Castleberry drove her in with a double.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Zero. That's how many times Mercer batters struck out in the game. Not a single Bear was sat down swinging or looking in the game. That marks the second time this season Mercer did not record a strikeout at the plate matching the zero Ks against Georgia State on Feb. 22.
