Rud Sets Stolen Base Record, Bears Fall at South Carolina, 3-1
4/13/2017 9:04:00 PM | Softball
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Meghan Rud was 2-for-3 with a run scored and set a new school record with her 32nd stolen base of the season but the Bears dropped a 3-1 decision at South Carolina Thursday evening.
Â
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Taylor Rodgers drew a bases loaded walk to put the Bears on top, 1-0. South Carolina (24-17) responded in the latter half of the inning, scoring three runs on two hits and taking advantage of a Mercer error to put the game out of reach for the Bears (19-24).
Â
In the circle, Anna O'Neill (0-2) was impressive as she matched a season-high four strikeouts while allowing only one earned run on four hits. Maxine Rodriguez pitched 2/3 an inning in relief, walking one and striking out one.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
The honor has to go to the school record holder herself. Meghan Rud had a game-high two hits, drew a walk and scored Mercer's only run of the game. But the most notable play by the junior came in the third inning when she stole second base. That marked her 32nd swipe of the year, breaking her own school record of 31 stolen bases in a season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Credit impressive performances in the circle by Anna O'Neill and Maxine Rodriguez as not only were the Gamecocks held to only four hits but South Carolina was just 1-for-13 (.077) when putting runners on base.
