Rally Falls Short for Mercer as Bears Split Doubleheader
4/29/2017 6:50:00 PM | Softball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer scored runs in three consecutive innings but could not overcome Western Carolina's four-run inning as the Bears dropped a 4-3 decision in the second game of Saturday's action, splitting the doubleheader.
Â
Western Carolina (15-26, 4-9 Southern) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth after an error and two passed balls helped them take the early lead. Mercer (22-29, 8-9) had put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but failed to score.
Â
The Bears got on the board in the fourth when Taylor Rodgers took a pitch off her helmet, knocking it off, with the bases loaded (Rodgers would be okay). The next inning, Shaila Warren hit an RBI groundout to short with Emma Andrew on base.
Â
Meghan Rud would bring the Bears within one in the sixth as she stole second base. Shortly thereafter she stole third – for her third stolen base of the game, tying a career high – and scored on an errant throw by the Catamount catcher. But six of the final seven Mercer batters were retired in the Bears 15th one-run decision of the season.
Â
Maxine Rodriguez (3-8) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs – two earned – on two hits while walking two and striking out two in 4.0 innings in the circle. Stella Preston finished the game and did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out one.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Meghan Rud easily gets the nod with her 2-for-2 performance at the plate. With two walks along with her two hits, she reached base in every plate appearance and made the Catamounts fret with three stolen bases, matching a career high mark. Additionally, she made a snow cone catch in left center to end the threat in the fourth inning, preventing Western Carolina from scoring any more runs.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The three Mercer batters hit by a pitch ties a season high for the team.
