Bears Roll Past VMI in SoCon Home Opener

MACON, Ga. – Mercer Men's Soccer (4-4-2, 2-0-0) used four unanswered goals to defeat VMI (0-7-2, 0-2-0), 4-1, on Saturday night at Bear Field to remain undefeated in Southern Conference action.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Mercer fired a season-high 30 shots in tonight's contest, including placing 10 shots on frame. The Bears held the Keydets to just three shots with one on goal.

MAN OF THE MATCH
In just his second career game for Mercer, Rooby Dalusma registered two goals on six shots. Dalusma proved to connect on the game winner in the 47th minute, later adding an insurance goal in the 89th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VMI struck first just 39 seconds into the game as Willson Tuck flicked a ball past Jeremy Booth, assisted by Christopher McGhan for the early 1-0 lead.

Trenton Whitely buried the game-tying goal in the eighth minute off a masterful volley from 25 yards out. Whitely's shot came off a corner kick in which the VMI defense failed to clear. Whitely seized the opportunity, lacing the ball into the upper 90 for the 1-1 equalizer.

Mercer tallied three consecutive goals in the second half to pull away from the Keydets. Dalusma connected on two of the three goals, including a brilliant chip shot over the keeper's outstretched arms in the 89th minute. Will Bagrou recorded his eighth goal of the season and fourth in the last three matches with a strike in the 77th minute, assisted by Jacob Chadwell.
