Bears Fall 2-1 at Furman Sunday
10/14/2018 7:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer women's soccer squad suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Furman Paladins Sunday afternoon at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Â
Stat of the Match
The match was extremely physical from start to finish as the teams combined for 30 total fouls. Four yellow cards were also displayed during the match.
Â
Woman of the Match
Freshman midfielder Payton Schurr was the woman of the match for Mercer, netting her second goal of the weekend just 11 seconds into Sunday's decision. Schurr's goal broke the program record for fastest goal scored.
How It Happened
The Bears wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Abigail Zoeller dished a ball to Payton Schurr who chipped the ball over the keeper's head just 11 seconds into the match. Mercer was tested in the 10th minute but Jordyn Ebert snagged the save to protect the Bears' 1-0 lead.
Â
The Paladins found an equalizer off a corner kick in the 20th minute as Erin Houlihan fired one into the box that then deflected into the back of the net. The physicality began to increase as Mercer defenders Megan Delmonico and Haley McDuffee picked up yellow cards in the 30th minute. The first half ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
Â
The home team came out strong in the final stanza, controlling the action the majority of the time. Playing its second consecutive road match, fatigue began to set in with the Bears and Furman was able to capitalize. The Paladins put away a set piece goal at the 76th minute, as Virginia Poe connected off of an assist from Faith Hauberg. This gave Furman a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished.
Notables
"We knew it would be a tough match with Furman this afternoon. They are always a tough battle for us. With us coming in on less than 48 hours rest and Furman having a full week to prepare, we knew we would have our hands full. However, I was proud of our girls' effort today. We came out early on and scored very quick and controlled the momentum. Unfortunately, fatigue eventually set in and they put two set pieces away and that was the difference. Hopefully in the tournament with equal rest we will see how we can do." —Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
Up Next
Mercer will return to the friendly confines of Betts Stadium to host the ETSU Bucs next Friday, Oct. 19. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
