Mercer Rallies Late for 2-1 Overtime Victory Over ETSU
10/19/2018 10:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer squad fought back from a late one goal deficit to defeat the East Tennessee Bucs, 2-1, after extra time Friday night at Betts Stadium. With the victory, the Bears improve to 9-5-4 overall and 4-2-2 in Southern Conference play. ETSU falls to 7-10-0 overall and 5-3-0 in SoCon action.
Â
Stat of the Match
Mercer dominated possession from start to finish, out-shooting the Bucs 25-13 on the night.
Â
Woman of the Match
Junior midfielder Jasmine Spence was the woman of the match for the Bears, providing an extra spark off the bench and assisting on the late equalizer.
How It Happened
Mercer was the aggressor on offense in the first half but couldn't capitalize and find the back of the net. The first half ended in a scoreless 0-0 tie as both teams came up empty on generating any scoring plays.
ETSU got on the board at the 66 minute mark when Elena Pisani sent one through the posts. The goal was set up following Fiona Dodge's corner kick just moments earlier.
Mercer then went on the attack and continued to put pressure on the Bucs' goalie. At the 88 minute mark, Sarah Adcock knocked one in thanks to an assist from Jasmine Spence. The goal tied the score at 1-1 as the clock continued to wind down in regulation.
Overtime ensued and both teams had some chances to gain the lead but nothing materialized. Shortly after the second overtime period began, Mercer's Alina McCue nailed one through after having her shot blocked to give the Bears the 2-1 victory. The game-winning goal was set up by Abigail Zoeller's corner kick.
Notables
"It was a fantastic performance from our girls tonight. I was very proud of their effort from start to finish. We came out on the attack tonight and we were the aggressor. Sometimes this is a bittersweet game when the ball won't go in and unfortunately we didn't put our early chances away. Credit to ETSU for putting away the opening goal on the set piece. Our girls kept plugging away and creating chances. Sarah Adcock had a nice chance there at the end to tie it up and did just that. We carried that momentum into overtime and kept the energy high. I am very proud of our girls tonight, but we aren't done yet. We will be back here on Sunday to battle Western Carolina and we know what is at stake for the first round of the Southern Conference tournament." —Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
