Mercer Drops 1-0 Decision to WCU in Extra Time
10/21/2018 6:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer squad fell victim to a late penalty call in the 107th minute of play, falling 1-0 to Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at Betts Stadium. With the result, the Bears finish the regular season 9-6-4 overall and 4-3-2 in Southern Conference play.
Â
Stat of the Match
Mercer dominated possession from start to finish, outshooting the Catamounts 16-14 over the match.
Â
Woman of the Match
Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert was the player of the game for the Bears. Ebert snagged seven saves throughout the match before the controversial penalty call.
How It Happened
Mercer controlled things from the start of the match. The first shot was recorded by Itzy Sanchez-Gracia in the 16th minute, sending the ball high of the frame. The Bears saw their first real chance of the match in the 28th minute as Sarah Adcock was denied by the crossbar and Abigail Zoeller's follow up was blocked. Mercer would record three more shots in the period but was unable to find the back of the net as the teams entered the locker room knotted up at 0-0.
Â
The Bears continued to apply pressure and push for an opening goal, firing off four shots in the first fifteen minutes of the second period. Western Carolina saw their best chance of the match in the 67th minute as Eynde Frazier headed one towards goal but was denied by the crossbar. The crossbar continued to provide frustration as Kylie Buchanan was denied in the 73rd minute. Neither squad would find a winner in regulation as the teams entered extra time tied at 0-0.
Â
Mercer's keeper, Jordyn Ebert, snagged a pair of clutch saves in the second period of extra time. In the 107th minute, a penalty kick was called against the Bears and WCU finished, stealing a 1-0 win.
Notables
"First I would like to recognize our six seniors. They have all contributed a great amount to this program and where this program is headed. So I would like to thank all of those girls for the work they have put in the past four seasons. As far as the game goes, it was a disappointing result. I felt we dominated the match and created several chances in front of goal. Unfortunately we weren't clinical enough in front of goal. We missed some easy opportunities and when you let a team like this hang around you put the game in the referees' hands. Obviously we are going to disagree with the penalty call, but he called it and we have to live with it. Hopefully this will provide some extra motivation heading into the conference tournament." —Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
