Stingy Defense and Relentless Ball Pressure Lead Bears to Key Road Win
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sarah Adcock's late game-winner helped propel Mercer to a thrilling 1-0 victory over The Citadel Friday afternoon at WLI Field. The Bears improve to 7-4-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the Southern Conference, picking up three critical points with the road win. The Citadel falls to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Woman of the Match
Sophomore forward Sarah Adcock was the woman of the match for the Bears. Adcock netted her third goal of the year from deep outside the box in the 82nd minute of play.
How It Happened
Mercer held the upper hand from the outset of the match, dominating on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. The Bears had numerous chances to find the net in the opening 45 minutes of play, but were unable to cash in. Megan Delmonico's shot at the 14 minute mark was the first real opportunity for Mercer, but her shot was wide of the target. Despite a dominating first half performance, the Bears found themselves in a scoreless tie at intermission.
The Mercer offense turned up the heat in the second half, putting pressure on The Citadel defense throughout the final stanza. Finally, at the 82nd minute mark, Adcock fired one through the posts on an assist from Payton Schurr. Mercer's defense remained strong the final minutes of play and the Bears took home the hard-fought conference victory.
Notables
"Anytime you can go on the road in the SoCon and get a win it is a good feat. Here at The Citadel they always make it tough for us; it's always a good battle. Credit to Ciaran (Bulldogs' Head Coach) he has turned the program around here and made it difficult. Our girls came out though and we worked hard. There were some times in the game I thought we could've been a bit better but a sign of a good team is finding a way to get it done. We will take the three points and are looking forward to playing Wofford and Furman next weekend."—Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
Up Next
Mercer will have a week off before heading to Spartanburg, S.C., to face the Wofford Terriers, next Friday, Oct. 12. Start time is slated for 7 p.m. (ET).
