SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bears remained undefeated on the road in Southern Conference play, snagging three points away from home as Mercer blanked Wofford, 3-0, Friday night.
Stat of the Match
The Bears dominated on the offensive end throughout the match, outshooting their opponent 22-12 and earning eight corners on the night while only conceding two.
Woman of the Match
Itzy Sanchez-Gracia was the woman of the match for the Bears. Sanchez-Gracia provided a spark off the bench, netting her first career goal for Mercer in the second half of play.
How It Happened
Mercer controlled the tempo from the start of the match, dominating on both the offensive and defensive ends of the pitch. The Bears opened up scoring in the 5th minute of play as Payton Schurr netted her third goal of the year, assisted by Brie Pavol and Abigail Zoeller. Zoeller added another point to her resume, scoring an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. The Bears nearly stretched to a 3-0 lead as Pace Stephenson was denied by the crossbar in the 36th minute. Mercer protected the 2-0 score line into the halftime break.
The Mercer offense continued to apply pressure on the Wofford defense throughout the final stanza. Itzy Sanchez-Gracia provided an insurance goal for the Bears, netting her first goal in a Mercer uniform at the 64th minute mark. The Bears would see several more chances in the match, holding strong for a 3-0 victory.
